CHAPTER 13

All thoughts of Gary Redding and Luke Rowe and their deaths, as well as any reminders of my job and my now non-existent love life, had to be put on the back burner. Tonight was all about spending time with Mom and gaining some practical skills. I’d talked Mom into signing up for the first aid certification class with me soon after my temp job at the oral surgeon’s office and my first experience stumbling across a murder scene.

The desire to take this class had actually come two months earlier than that when I’d found an Elliot Design client, Janice Richardson, bleeding to death on her bathroom floor. I’d been able to help her, but I’d second-guessed myself the entire time. I wanted to be prepared if I ever stumbled into a situation like that again.

Mom just needed to get out of the house and the stress and worry of taking care of Dad every once in a while. She didn’t necessarily need to go to a first aid class, but since that’s what I wanted to do, I was dragging her along. Yes, okay, maybe pottery or Pilates would have been a better choice. I’d let her pick the subject next time.

About a dozen other people gathered in the classroom inside the city recreation center, including a grandparent-age couple and what looked like a father and his young teenage daughter. Everyone sat on one of the hard plastic chairs that had been arranged in a semi-circle around the teacher and the whiteboard.

It’s a classroom in a rec center, I told myself as my inner design snob threatened to throw a hissy fit. Yes, the peachy wall color clashed with the turquoise industrial-grade carpet, and the assorted colors of the plastic chairs added more unsettling chaos to the entire vibe. Nice colors weren’t any more expensive than garish ones. Why not make the place feel pleasing and comfortable? Not your place to judge. Maybe there was a reason for the color choices. But a creamy gray-white wall color with a gray and burgundy carpet and navy plastic chairs would have worked so much better for this space. Shut up. Maybe they got everything at a discount. Because I didn’t know any other reason someone would choose those colors.

Mom and I snagged two chairs close together. Hers was bright orange and mine was mustard yellow. They were about as comfortable as they were appealing to look at.

“This is going to be so interesting, isn’t it?” Mom asked.

“Educational, at least.” I turned toward her, but she hadn’t been talking to me. All I saw was the back of her head. She faced the teenage girl who sat next to her.

The teenager frowned as she sat there slumped in her chair. The father squirmed. My guess was that neither he nor the daughter had come up with the idea of spending quality time together at this class. The girl’s mother had probably thought it would be a great father-daughter bonding activity. Or she just might have wanted to get them both out of the house so she could take a relaxing bath.
